Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s long-standing position on Sunday, stating that Russia opposes Taiwan’s independence in any form and considers the island an “inalienable part of China.” In an interview with the state news agency TASS, Lavrov emphasized that Russia’s stance is consistent and has been repeatedly confirmed at the highest levels of government.

Lavrov further described the Taiwan question as strictly an internal affair for Beijing, asserting that China has legitimate grounds to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also took the opportunity to criticize Western influence in the region, suggesting that Western nations are attempting to profit from Taiwan’s technology and weapons sales as a means of exerting economic pressure on China.

In addition to the remarks on Taiwan, Lavrov issued a stern warning to Japan. He claimed that Tokyo has embarked on an “accelerated course toward militarization” and advised the Japanese leadership to “weigh up” the potential consequences of such a shift. Lavrov stated that Japan’s current trajectory could destabilize regional security and dismantle the existing global order, urging Russia’s neighbor to “think carefully” before making hasty strategic decisions
