Ukraine’s Black Forest Reconnaissance Brigade says it destroyed a Russian command vehicle used to coordinate an S-300 air defense system in a drone strike.
Footage released by the Ukrainian brigade shows a loitering drone striking the side of a military vehicle, sending smoke and debris into the air.
The brigade said the target was a command-and-staff vehicle associated with the Soviet-era S-300 surface-to-air missile system.
The vehicle was identified by Ukraine’s United24 platform as a 5K76 or upgraded 5K76M command-and-control vehicle, which serves as a mobile command center for the S-300 system.
Ukrainian forces said destroying such a vehicle could weaken Russia’s air defense network and create opportunities for Ukrainian aircraft and drones to operate deeper behind Russian lines.
The brigade described the strike as a significant blow because the vehicles contain specialized electronics and require highly trained crews to operate.
The S-300 is a family of Soviet-designed surface-to-air missile systems that entered service in the late 1970s and remains an important component of Russian air defenses.
Ukraine has repeatedly called on Western allies to provide additional air defense systems as Russia continues missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
The shortage of air defense interceptors has become more pressing as U.S. and Gulf stockpiles have been affected by the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
